Recruitment and selection

Our recruitment and selection procedure for cleaning staff is set out below.

Stage 1 - Advertisement / Referral

People are to be invited to apply by placing advertisements in local newspapers or by referral. Advertisements will contain work location, rates of pay and other benefits, company name and telephone number with an invitation to call if interested.

Stage 2 - Verbal Informal Telephone Interview

An informal interview is carried out over the telephone to establish the suitability of the prospective employee. Critical questions to be asked include where they live, availability, current employment status and experience. If the prospective employee is suitable they should be briefly informed about NJC company philosophy and a formal interview then arranged.

Stage 3 - Formal Interview

A formal interview will be carried out by the Service Support Manager. Standard NJC interview questions are asked to obtain information regarding the employee honesty, integrity, employment history, reliability, and attitude. Prospective employees are informed about NJC history, philosophy, customer requirements, quality standards and teamwork with other suppliers. At least one character and one employment reference will be obtained.

Stage 4 - Offer of Employment

If a prospective employee is deemed to be satisfactory for the post, a verbal offer of employment is to be made at the conclusion of the formal interview, subject to satisfactory references, including criminal checks for government buildings and immigration checks. References are obtained by telephone using the NJC standard reference questions checklist.

Stage 5 - Induction / Training

Cleaners are introduced to their Line Manager who will carry out a formal induction to include informing the employee with regard to their work surroundings, fire escape routes, work area responsible for and tasks responsible for. Formal training to be carried out including product use, COSHH assessment, cleaning methodology, quality standards, health and safety, security and fire. Employees must read the NJC safety and employment procedures manual and sign acknowledgement forms before commencing work. Principal Statement of Terms and Conditions of Employment are issued within one week of employment commencement.

Stage 6 - Probationary Period / Performance Review

Employment is to be subject to a three month probationary period where line managers must review ongoing performance and suitability for the post. This period may be extended if necessary.
